Trolls Compete in Benedictine Invitational

The outdoor track and field season began for the Trolls at the Benedictine University Invitational in Lisle, Illinois. While the teams were not at full strength, a number of athletes got their first taste of outdoor competition. The team also had their first NCCAA national qualifiers. In a field of schools that included NCAA Division I to junior college, the Trinity women finished in ninth place of 17 teams and the men were tied for 11th of 18 teams.

Leading the women’s team was a pair of freshmen who both reached NCCAA qualifying standards. Olivia Hoekstra hit the national standard in the 400 meter with her time of 1:01.06. She finished in seventh with five NCAA  DI competitors ahead of her.  Hoekstra also placed in the 200 meter in eighth place at 27.56. The other qualifier was Madelyn Clausen in the high jump. She cleared 4-11 and took second place overall. In addition she finished in seventh place in the pole vault with a height of 8-08.25.

Other place finishers for the women included Nicole Syverson in the 5000 meter, Sarah Kliora in the triple jump, and the 4 x 400 meter relay team.

The men’s team had a couple of sixth place finishes. Brantley VanOverloop had one of those finishes in the 800 meter where he posted a time of 2:02.54. Will VanDyken was a sixth place finisher in the javelin with a throw of 129-05. VanOverloop took ninth in that event.

The men picked up points in the 5000 meter with Kyle VanderPlaats in seventh place and Cole Akimoff in eighth place. The other team points came in the 4 x 400 meter relay were the Trolls had two foursomes.  

The teams return to Lisle next week on April 13-14 for the Benedictine Relays.
