Trolls Compete at St. Ambrose

In their second meet of the indoor season the Trolls took part in the St. Ambrose University Invitational (Davenport, Iowa). The meet had the women's team finishing in sixth place. They tallied 52 points, scoring in nine different events. The men finished in fifth place with 60 points, scoring in seven different events. The meet also produced the teams’ first NAIA qualifier and had six athletes reach NCCAA qualifying standards.

Freshman April VanRyn became this year’s first NAIA qualifier when she hit the mark in the 5000 meter. With a time of 17:35.37 she took first place in the event and finished over a minute ahead of the rest of the field of 13 runners.  Her time is the fastest in the event in the NAIA for the season.

Also scoring on the track in an individual event was Olivia Hoekstra in the 400 meter with a fifth place finish. Her time of 1:02.48 achieves NCCAA qualifying standards. The other NCCAA qualifiers for the women came in the field events. Madelyn Clausen took second place in the high jump with a height of 5-01. Muabon Paye took fourth in the long jump with a distance of 16-05. Miranda Nikkel threw her personal best in the weight throw and made finals with a toss of 39-09.25.

For the men’s team Caleb DeWeerd had a good day with two first place finishes. He won the 800 meter with a time of 2:00.59. That mark is NCCAA qualifying. He also led the pack in the mile and first 20 seconds ahead of the next runner with a time of 4:23.01.

The team did well in the mile as behind DeWeerd were Brantley VanOverloop in second place at 4:43.32 and Nick Heidinger in fourth place at 4:49.77.

Kyle VanderPlaats picked up points in an individual race with a fourth place finish in the 3000 meter. He finished with a time of 9:19.39.

The teams will compete again on February 3 at Olivet Nazarene University.
