Trolls Begin Season at Trine

The season opener for the track and field teams took place at the Keith Turner Alumni Open at Trine University (Angola, Indiana). The athletes were tested for the first time and got a taste of competition. The women’s team already had two athletes achieve a NCCAA national qualifying standards. Team scores were not recorded, but the Trolls did have seven top five finishes in individual events.

The mile race was a highlight for both the women’s and men’s team.  For the ladies Ashley Jourdan and Megan DeWeerd finished in second and third place respectively and became NCCAA national qualifiers. Jourdan crossed the line at 5:19.33 and DeWeerd at 5:26.54. The men had eight team members compete in the mile with four finishing in the top ten and six under the five minute mark. Cody Velthuizen led the pack with a 4:36.30 for a second place finish. Brantley VanOverloop took fifth place with a 4:42.96.

For the women Jessica Wiersma and Sarah Kilora both made the finals in the 60 meter. Another notable performance was a fifth place finish for Anna Spotts in the 600 meter.

In addition to the mile finishes, the men’s team had a top five finish with Luke Boss in fifth in the 1000 meter with a time of 2:53.82.

The teams’ second meet will be on January 28 at Grand Valley State University at 1 pm EST.
