Trolls Play with Thunder

In a non-conference outing the Trolls battled with Wheaton College (Wheaton, Illinois) in a double-header. The first game got away from the Trolls in the latter innings and they lost with an 8-1 final. The second game was pushed to extra innings before the Thunder broke the 1-1 tie and handed the Trolls a 2-1 loss.

The Trolls were the first team on the scoreboard in game one with a run in the third inning. Katie Demas singled to the right side to get on base and, after stealing both second and third, she scored when Audrey Ricker put the ball into play. Unfortunately that run was the only one the Trolls scored in the game.

Wheaton tied the game in the bottom of the third on a triple. They added two more in the fourth inning and went ahead 4-1 in the fifth inning on a solo homer. The Thunder kept the base path busy in the bottom of the sixth and scored four runs and had bases loaded when the inning ended.

For the game Trinity had four hits and Wheaton registered 11. Demas led the team with two hits while Ricker had the only RBI. Emili Bell was on the mound for the loss.

In the second game Trinity limited Wheaton’s base runners with Dara Megyesi collecting 11 strike-outs.  The Trolls scored their only run in the game in the third inning when a single to left field by Brandi Machado drove in a run. The team had runners on base in each of the next four innings, but could not covert them to runs.

Trinity held the Thunder scoreless through four innings. In the fifth Wheaton got on base on a double and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly. The 1-1 tie held through the end of regulation and the game moved in to extra innings.

Playing the tie-breaking rules with a runner place at second base at the start of the extra inning, Trinity moved their runner to third on a sacrifice bunt. The team could not get her home with outs for the next two batters. In the bottom of the inning, Wheaton needed only one batter to advance their runner as they tripled to score and end the game.

For the game the Trolls had six hits with Megyesi claiming three and Machado getting two. Wheaton ended with two hits and four errors. Megyesi pitched the complete game with 11 strike-outs.

The Trolls play next on April 3 at home in a conference double-header with Robert Morris at 3 pm.
