Trolls Take Two Losses in Season Opener

The Trolls opened their 2018 season with two games played in the Avanti Dome in Pekin, Illinois. In their season debut they faced Culver-Stockton College (Canton, Missouri) in the morning game. They fell 10-1 to the Wildcats in five innings. The afternoon game was against Lindenwood-Belleville University (Belleville, Illinois) and was another mercy rule loss with a 15-4 final after five innings.

Against Culver-Stockton, the Trolls fell behind early when they gave up five runs on four hits in the second inning. Trinity’s only run of the game came in the bottom of that inning when Chloe McRobbie got on base on an error and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Another fielding error put a runner on base for the Wildcats in the fourth inning and they moved the runner around to gain one more run. Culver-Stockton had another two hits in the fifth inning to bring four runs across the plate to make it a 10-1 game. When the Trolls failed to score in the bottom of the inning the game ended on the mercy rule.

Trinity had four hits for the game and three errors while Culver-Stockton had eight hits and two errors. Dara Megyesi was on the mound for the loss.

The Trolls started their first at bat against Lindenwood-Belleville with two runs.  Trinity used the bunt to get runners on and around the bases. Caitlyn Aardema also came up with a double to drive one run in. The team’s lead did not last long as the Lynx scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-2 lead.

A couple of fielding errors by Lindenwood allowed the Trolls to score two runs in the top of the second and close the gap. The Lynx got one back in the bottom half to make it 6-4.

Lindenwood-Belleville started to pull away from the Trolls with another two runs in the bottom of the third to double Trinity’s score. Then in the fourth inning they added seven runs to open the scoring difference to 15-4. The Trolls could not keep the game alive in the fifth inning and the mercy rule was applied.

The Trolls had a total of three hits and committed four errors. Lindenwood-Belleville had 10 hits with five errors. Aardema, Audrey Ricker, and Megyesi were all on the mound for Trinity.

The team will next be in action on the Spring Break trip to Florida on March 3-9.
