Trolls Fight with Titans

The Trolls battled with Indiana University-South Bend (South Bend, Indiana) in a conference double-header and came away with two wins. The first game was almost two complete games wrapped into one as it went to 13 innings before the Trolls took a 6-5 win. The second game had lots of hits and runs and ended with a 9-6 Trinity victory. With the win the Trolls improve to 15-15 overall and 8-10 in the CCAC.

In the first game IU-South Bend got on the board first with a run in the 3rd inning. However the Trolls took over the lead in the 4th inning when they scored five runs on six hits. Two of those runs came on a double by Melinda Russell and one on a triple by Katie Shoulta.

The Titans scored twice in each the 4th and 5th innings to put the game into a tie at 5-5. When neither team scored in the next two innings the game moved into extended play. The Trolls had a good opportunity to end the game in the 8th with runners on 2nd and 3rd and again in the 11th with a runner on third, but they did not break the tie. In the six extra innings, the Titans were three up and three down in four of their at bats and had only three runners on base.

The game proceeded into the 13th inning before the Trolls finally broke through with a run. Mercedes Munoz single and eventually score on a sacrifice fly to center field by Russell.

Each team had a total of 14 hits for the game. The Trolls were led by Jamie Budreau and Munoz who had three each. Dara Megyesi pitched the final seven innings for the win.

The teams kept the base path busy in the second game. Tied at 2-2 after three innings the Trolls took the lead in the 4th with two runs. Russell doubled and scored on RBI single by Jenna Steinkamp. A double by Alisson Ramirez brought Steinkamp home. The team’s lead was short lived as the Titans added two in the bottom half to put the team in a 4-4 tie.

The Trolls charged out ahead in the 6th inning with five hits and five runs. In the inning Budreau doubled for to bring one run in and Russell doubled to score two. IU-South Bend tried to answer in the bottom half and gained two before the Trolls shut them down. It was that 9-6 final that held through the next inning.

The Trolls had 15 hits for the game and IU-South Bend had 10. Russell ended the game with three hits and two RBI. Phillips also had three hits while Budreau recorded two with two RBI. Megyesi got her second win of the day on the mound as she pitched the final 3.1 innings.

Trinity plays next on April 19 at 3 pm at home against the University of St. Francis.
