Trolls Sweep Crimson Wave
The Trolls improved their conference standing with a sweep of Calumet College of St. Joseph (Whiting, Indiana). Trinity scored four runs in the 4th inning of the first game to post a 4-0 shut-out win. In the second game they took the lead in the 2nd inning and held it for a 9-6 final. The team is now 13-15 for the season and 6-10 in the CCAC.
The team did not find the base path in the first three innings, but took control in the 4th inning with three hits that lead to four runs. The first run came across the plate on a RBI single by Mercedes Munoz. A sacrifice fly by Melinda Russell led to the 2nd run. An error by Calumet allowed two more Trolls to score to make it 4-0 game.
Calumet got runners on base in the final five innings, but the Trolls kept them from getting into scoring position. After a scoreless 7th inning, the Trolls posted the shut-out.
Trinity had a total of five hits in the game which came from five different players. Jenna Steinkamp was on the mound for the win and shut-out.
Unlike the first game the scoring came early and more often in the second game. Trinity threatened in almost every inning and scored in five of the seven. To open the game the Trolls got their first six runners on and scored three runs. Calumet-St. Joseph came right back in the bottom half with three hits and three runs to make it a 3-3 game.
Trinity continued to add runs on the board in the following innings while Calumet-St. Joseph was quiet until the final inning. A single by Chloe McRobbie in the 2nd scored one run. Jamie Budreau and Katelyn Sena hit to get on in the 4th inning and Russell doubled to bring those runs in. A hit by Emily Phillips later in the inning brought Russell home to give the Trolls a 7-3 lead.
The Trolls tacked on one run in each the 5th and 6th inning to go ahead by six runs. Calumet made one last rally to catch up and scored three runs on a home run in the 7th to bring the final score to 9-6.
For the game the Trolls had a total of 10 hits. Russell led the team with two hits and three RBI. McRobbie and Sena each had two hits as well. Megyesi pitched the entire game and recorded nine strike-outs.
The Trolls continue conference play on April 14 in a double-header at Indiana University-South Bend at 1 pm EST.
