Trolls Split at Elmhurst

The Trolls took a break in their conference play for a double-header at Elmhurst College (Elmhurst, Illinois). The team came away with a split decision. They convincingly won the first game with a 9-2 total. In the second game Elmhurst had the last say as they broke a tie to hand the Trolls a 3-2 loss. The team is now 9-13 for the season.

Trinity came on strong in the final innings of the first game to take the win. A solo homer by Chloe McRobbie in the 3rd inning put the Trolls on the board and with another run in the 5th inning they tied the game at 2-2.

The Trolls started the 6th inning with three consecutive hits and loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly by McRobbie drove in one run and a single by Jamie Budreau scored the other two to put the Trolls on top at 5-2.  Trinity continued their scoring in the7th inning with four more runs. Both Katie Shoulta and McRobbie doubled to score the majority of those runs.

Overall Trinity had 16 hits for the game and Elmhurst had eight. McRobbie was 3-for-3 with three RBI. Emily Phillips also had three hits and registered two RBIs. Jenna Steinkamp got the win on the mound.

The hitting slowed down for the Trolls in the second game as they got only five hits. Elmhurst started off hot with three hits for two runs in the 1st inning to take the 2-0 lead. The Trolls got those runs back in the 3rd inning when Phillips led off with a triple and Katie Shoulta hit her in. A single later in the inning by Budreau gave the Trolls another run to tie the score.

After that 3rd inning the Trolls’ offensive stalled. They got one runner on base in the 4th inning, but did not get another runner on base in the final three innings. Elmhurst only had one hit in the last three innings, but it was a double that scored a runner who got on base on a walk. It was that run that made the difference.

The five hits for the Trolls came from five different batters. Budreau and Shoulta each had one RBI.

The team will play again on Saturday, April 8, in a conference double-header at Trinity International at 12 pm.
