CCAC Opener Results in Losses

The Trolls started their conference schedule on the road at St. Ambrose University (Davenport, Iowa).  The first game only went to five innings before the Trolls suffered a 9-1 mercy rule loss. The team had the lead in the second game, but was overcome in the late innings for a 5-4 loss. The team is now 6-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

In the first game the Trolls had a hard time slowing down the offensive of the Fighting Bees. A two-run homer in the bottom of the 1st inning put St. Ambrose on the board. Trinity got one of those runs back in the t0p of the 3rd inning when Emily Phillips led off with a single and Alisson Ramirez singled to bring her home. The team had bases loaded when the inning ended. Their momentum was dampened in the bottom of the inning when two errors allowed St. Ambrose to capitalize on two hits to make it a 4-1 game.

The Fighting Bees opened the gap wider in the 4th inning with five hits and three runs. The Trolls failed to score in the top of the 5th. After one out in the bottom of the 5th the Fighting Bees rallied off three hits of which the final one scored two runs to end the game on the mercy rule.

The Trolls had three hits for the game and Ramirez had two of those. St. Ambrose recorded a total of 11 hits. Jenna Steinkamp pitched the 4.1 innings for the loss.

Trinity came back in the second game and fought to the final inning before dropping in the 5-4 decision. The Trolls had 10 hits for the game, but left runners stranded in every inning and committed four errors which cost them.

Two Trinity errors led to two runs for the Fighting Bees in the 2nd inning. The Trolls took over the lead in the next inning when Jamie Budreau doubled to bring two across the plate and then she scored later in the inning to make it 3-2.

In the 4th inning the Trolls loaded the bases, but only got one run out of the situation to go ahead by 4-2. St. Ambrose closed the gap with a run in the 5th inning and put the pressure on in the 6th inning. They loaded the bases and tied the game on a single. Then with bags full again, St. Ambrose put the ball in play and brought the go-head run across the plate.

The Trolls got a runner on base in the top of the 7th, but could not move her before the inning ended thus ending the game.

Of the team’s 10 hits, Budreau had three and total of two RBIs and Melinda Russell had two hits. Dara Megyesi got the loss on the mound.

The Trolls have their home opener on March 24 in a 3 pm double-header with Judson University.
