Trolls Finish Strong in Florida

The final day of competition for the Trolls in the PFX Spring Games in Florida was a good one as the team finished with two more victories. They started their day off right with a 9-0 mercy rule win in five innings over preseason NAIA No. 7 Marian University (Indianapolis, Indiana).  They finished with a come-from- behind 5-3 victory over Cornerstone University (Grand Rapids, Michigan). Overall the team was 6-2 in their Spring Break trip and is 6-4 overall for the season.

In the game with Marian, Trinity handed the Knights their first loss of the season. Trinity got things going in the 1st inning with four runs, of which three were scored on a home run by Mercedes Munoz. After a couple of quiet innings, the Trolls struck again in the 4th inning with another four runs. In the inning Emily Phillips had a RBI double and Melina Russell had a single that brought two runners across the plate.

In the 5th inning freshman Kirsti Kooiker stepped in to pinch hit for a RBI single that gave the Trolls a 9-0 lead. Marian loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half, but the Trolls held them to end the game on the mercy rule.

The Trolls had 10 hits for the game and Marian had six. Munoz and Alisson Ramirez each had two hits. Steinkamp pitched the complete game and recorded the shut-out.

Trinity trailed through a large majority of the game with Cornerstone, but found their bats when they were needed. The team had only two hits through the first five innings and trailed 3-0. They started the 6th inning off with singles by Melinda Russell and Chloe McRobbie and followed with a double by Jamie Budreau that scored two runs to make it 3-2.

The team was not finished as they loaded the bases and scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly to center field by Katelyn Sena. The team kept the base path busy and with a runner on third they scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Trinity protected their lead in the top of the 7th and walked away with the victory.

The Trolls had seven hits for the game with five of them in the 6th inning. Russell and Phillips each had two hits and Budreau led with 2 RBI. Steinkamp went the distance on the mound for the win.

The Trolls return home and will start their conference action on March 22 at St. Ambrose University in a 4 pm double-header.
