Softball Begins Spring Break Play
The Trolls began their week of Spring Break play in the PXF Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. In the first day of competition the team split results of their two games with a 13-0 win over Cornerstone University (Grand Rapids, Michigan) and a 2-0 loss to Siena Heights University (Siena Heights, Michigan). On the second day the Trolls also had mixed results. They fell to Indiana Wesleyan University (Marian, Indiana), 8-3, but defeated Fisher College (Boston, Massachusetts), 23-3.
The Trolls started out the week with mercy rule 13-0 win in five innings over Cornerstone. The team took control of the game early with seven runs in the top of the 2nd. Those runs came on six hits, including a three-run double by Melinda Russell, and two errors. Trinity added another four runs in the 3rd inning and two in the 4th inning to post a 13-0 lead.
The Trolls limited the number of base runners for Cornerstone and allowed only two hits. The Golden Eagles got two runners on base in the 5th inning, but when they did not score the game ended on the mercy rule.
For the game Trinity had a total of 12 hits with Russell posting three as did Alisson Ramirez with three. Dara Megyesi got the win on the mound.
The runs were not as easy to come by in a game with Siena Heights. The Trolls only had one runner on base in the five innings. Their best opportunity to score was in the 1st inning when they advanced a runner to third. Defensively the Trolls gave up just two hits, but committed four errors which allowed Siena Heights to score one run in each the 2nd and 3rd innings. Those two runs were enough to hand the Trolls the loss.
The hits for the game belonged to Ramirez and Chloe McRobbie. Megyesi pitched the entire game for the loss.
The second day of competition started with a game against Indiana Wesleyan, a team receiving votes in the NAIA poll. The Trolls had eight hits for the game, but those did not turn into runs as they lost 8-3. Indiana Wesley started the scoring in the 4th inning when two home runs scored three runs. Jamie Budreau led off with a triple in the bottom half to help the Trolls put two runs on the board by the inning’s end.
Indiana Wesleyan continued to score in the 5th inning with four more runs to make it a 7-2 game. In the top of the 7th the Wildcats added one more run that the Trolls matched in the bottom when McRobbie singled to bring a runner home. However the team did not gain any more ground.
For the game Budreau was 3-for-3 at the plate and Emily Phillips had two hits. Jenna Steinkamp recorded the pitching loss.
The Trolls won in convincing fashion against Fisher with a 23-3 mercy rule finish. The team scored multiple runs in each of the five innings and tallied a total of 17 hits. They took the lead in the top of the 1st with five runs went ahead 9-0 after their second at-bat. Fisher got on the board in the bottom of the 2nd inning with a three-run homer.
Runs continued to come across the plate for the Trolls who added five in the 3rd, three in the 4th, and another six in the 5th. With the 20-run difference the game ended after five innings.
Almost everyone on the team registered a hit and many players had multiple contacts. Phillips ended the game with four hits. McRobbie registered three hits and four RBI and Katie Shoulta also had three hits with five RBI. Megyesi pitched for the win.
The team will next be in action on March 9 in games with Lourdes University and Fisher College.
