Trolls Denied in Season Opener
The Trolls made their 2017 season debut under new head coach Jackie Manrique with a pair of games in Chatham, Illinois. It was a rough start for the team as they were shut-out in both games that ended early on the mercy rule. Their opener was a 9-0 loss in five innings to Culver-Stockton University (Canton, Missouri) and the second game was an 8-0 loss in six innings to Lindenwood-Belleville University (Belleville, Illinois).
Trinity started off their first at bat in the bottom of the 1st inning with a hit by Alisson Ramirez. Unfortunately that was the only hit the Trolls got for the game as they went for the next four innings with only one more runner on base.
Culver-Stockton started off the 2nd inning with a home run and proceeded to score four more runs that inning. The Wildcats added another four runs in the 5th inning to go ahead 9-0. When the Trolls did not score it the bottom half, the game ended on the mercy rule.
For the game the Trolls had one hit and Culver-Stockton had eight. Trinity committed three errors. Dara Megyesi was on the mound for the loss.
The Trolls were more successful at getting on base in the second game with Lindenwood-Belleville. Despite those efforts they could not get across the plate. The Lynx first got on the board in the 3rd inning with two runs and opened things up in the next inning with four more runs. With a 7-0 lead Lindenwood-Belleville brought one more run across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the gap eight and end the game.
Trinity had four hits for the game and Lindenwood-Belleville had 11. The hits for the Trolls belonged to Ramirez, Katelyn Sena, Jamie Budreau, and Emily Phillips. Jenna Steinkamp was on the mound for the team for the loss.
The team will play next in Florida on their spring break trip on March 6-10.
