Trolls Win in Final Game of Season
It was a wild finish in the final game of the season for the Trolls, but they came away with a 3-2 victory over the University of St. Francis (Joliet, Illinois). A total of three goals were scored in the final five minutes to change the 1-1 tie to the 3-2 final. For the Trolls all three of their goals were scored by senior Mauricio Salgado for his fifth hat trick of the season. The team ends their season with the most wins in the last five seasons at 8-9-1 overall. They were also 3-8-1 in the conference.
It was not until late in the first period when Salgado scored his first goal. In the 40th minute he blasted a shot on an assist from Gabriel Soler to put the Trolls ahead 1-0 at the half.
St. Francis made it a 1-1 game five minutes into the second period when they scored. The teams played in that deadlock for the next 35 minutes. The Trolls gained an advantage in the 85th minute when a foul in the box lead to a penalty kick which Salgado made count to give the Trolls the lead.
The 2-1 score changed quickly when Salgado completed his hat trick in the 88th minute to put the Trolls up by two goals. However St. Francis made things interesting when they scored with 1:07 left on the clock to close the gap. The Trolls controlled the final minute and came away with win.
For the game the Trolls had 17 shots and St. Francis had 19. Gabe Fennema recorded eight saves.
The game was the final one of the season for the team as they will not advance to post-season play.
