Trolls Finish First at Governors State Invitational

The Trolls were one of four teams competing in the Governors State University Invitational at Lincoln Oaks Golf Course in Crete, Illinois.  At the completion of the two-day event they were the top team.  After the first round the Trolls were in second place, but they made a strong showing to take over the lead after the second 18 holes.

In the first day of competition the team shot a 307 and was six strokes behind Governors State on the par 71 course. The Trolls out-shot the Jaguars by eight strokes on the second day with a 297 and ended with a two stroke win. Overall the Trinity had two-day total of 604, which is a record for low score for the program.

Not only did the team take first place, but the Trolls also had the top two golfers in the match. Alek Svabek and Steven Massey each recorded a total of 148 for a first place tie in the field of 20 golfers. Svabek shot a three-over 74 on day one and was one stroke back from the leader. She recorded another 74 on day two to move into the top spot. Massey had a 75 on Friday and sat in a tie for third place. He had the low round on Saturday with a 73 and moved up into a tie for first.

Jonathan Zandstra also finished among the top and medaled for the match with a fifth place tie. He shot and 78 on the first day and came back with a 74. Also in the top ten was Jim Vos with a ninth place finish with rounds of 80 and 76.

The final golfer for the team was Matt Dail who finished in 14th with an 83 and 88. Also golfing and scoring as an individual was Bob Schaaf recorded scores of 82 and 86 for 13th place.

The Trolls will compete again on April 11 at the University of St. Francis.
