Student-Athlete Spotlight: Jonathan Zandstra

Jonathan Zandstra ’17 has made a large impact on the Trinity golf program in his four seasons with the team.  In his career with the Trolls, the Schererville, Indiana native has not only grown as a golfer, but has also learned to cherish the Trinity community as well.  He has made many memories on the golf links and even more off the course with the people he has met.

It was the people at Trinity that made an impact on Jonathan when he visited as a prospective student and one of the reasons he decided to attend.  Once Jonathan got to Trinity, that sense of community did not fail to disappoint.

“In my time here at Trinity I have met some of my best friends. Friends that I am sure will last a lifetime.”

Jonathan’s peers are not the only people at Trinity he appreciates.  He has learned much from his professors and mentors who have helped him feel prepared for whatever he will face after he graduates.

“I think Trinity has done an outstanding job, not only equipping me with an excellent education, but also preparing me with the understanding that whatever I do after Trinity to keep God at the center of my life and to give Him all the glory.”

On the golf course Jonathan’s performance has improved over the past four seasons.  His average score per match has dropped 4.2 strokes since his freshmen year.  In this past fall season he posted a 78.8 average in 13 rounds and shot his career low of 71 on September 16 at Green Garden Country Club.  For the past two seasons Jonathan has helped his team win two NCCAA region titles and has participated in two NCCAA National Championships.  The Trolls’ spring season starts on March 30-April 1 with the Olivet Nazarene University Invitational.

In addition to being a member of the golf team, Jonathan also spent the one season playing on the men’s basketball team.

Where is your hometown? Schererville, Indiana

Why did you choose Trinity? I chose Trinity for a number of reasons: 1) It was a Christian school. My faith is really important to me and I knew I wanted to attend a Christian college.  2) When I took a visit everyone I met was so welcoming and you could tell were really genuine people.  3) I wanted to be near Chicago.

What is your favorite part about Trinity? My favorite part about Trinity is the close-knit community feel that it has. When you’re on campus you do not just feel like a number, like you might at a larger school. The professors and campus staff really take interest in you and you feel really connected and like you belong.

What is your favorite athletics memory as a Troll? My favorite athletic memory as a Troll was to be able to participate in the NCCAA Nationals with my golf team both my junior and senior year.

What do you plan on doing after graduation? After graduation I plan on working in the financial service industry near the Chicago-land area.

Do you have any pre-match rituals? I usually say a quick prayer before each round to remind myself that all the glory goes to God and I am representing Him out there on the golf course.

What is your favorite sport besides golf?  Besides golf my favorite sport is basketball.

What is your favorite Trinity tradition?  I would have to say my favorite Trinity tradition is the Midnight Madness celebration for basketball. I think it is really cool to see the school pride that night and all the energy and excitement in the gym.
