Trolls Push Governors State

The second round of the conference schedule started with a road game at Governors State University (University Park, Illinois), the top team in the CCAC standings. The Trolls trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, but by the intermission they were within three points at 36-33. The team remained within striking distance for the majority of the second period until the final minutes when Governors State pulled away for the 88-75 final. The Trolls are 6-17 overall and 2-12 in the CCAC.  

For the first minutes of the game the Trolls were ahead on the scoreboard. Trinity led at 14-13, but was out-scored 15-to-5 in a six minute stretch to fall behind at 28-19. At the two minute mark the Trolls had narrowed that gap to four points and at the half they were only down by three.

Governors State scored the first seven points of the second half to create a 10 point gap. The Trolls fought back and minutes later were within four points. On a three-pointer by Myles Birgans midway through the half the Trolls had the score to one at 56-55. The scoring margin remained within a bucket or two over the next several minutes.

With five minutes left in the half the Trolls trailed by three points at 67-64. The Jaguars scored the next six points to widen the gap. Trinity got as close as seven again, but a strong finish by Governors State created the 13 point difference at the buzzer.

Trinity shot .386 percent from the field, .357 percent from the arc, and .786 percent from the line. Governors State was .476 percent from the floor, .474 percent from the three-point line, and .760 percent from the free throw line. The Trolls controlled the boards with 45 rebounds while the Jaguars had 34. Leading the scoring was Birgans with 29 points. Jared Jonkman added 13 points and Patrick Bray had 10. Jonkman, Bray, and Joshua Shannon each had seven rebounds.

The Trolls will play next on January 30 at Robert Morris University at 7 pm.
