Trollls Beat at Buzzer

A conference game at Olivet Nazarene University (Bourbonnais, Illinois) ended in a disappointing loss for the Trolls. The team took over the lead in the first half and was up by seven at the break, 45-38. Each team had the lead at times in the second half. The Trolls scored in the final seconds of the game to take a one point edge, but the Tigers sunk a shot at the buzzer to hand the Trolls the 77-75 loss.

The Trolls started the game with a 9-0 lead to get things going on a positive note. The team went ahead by 10 points, but lost that lead on an 11-point run by the Tigers.  The Trolls scored the next basket to regain the top spot which they held for the rest of the half. The scoring gap was as wide as 11 points and as few as one point and at the half-time the Trolls were ahead 45-38.

Trinity went up by 12 points in the opening three minutes of the second half and continued to hold a sizable lead for the next few minutes. With 11 minutes left the Trolls were ahead at 61-53. Over the next three minutes Olivet went on a six point run to pull to within two.

With four minutes to play Olivet Nazarene took over the top spot for the first time in the half at 67-66. The Tigers stayed ahead until with 34 seconds left Nate Hurt drilled a three-pointer to give the Trolls a 73-71 lead. The Tigers answered with a three pointer with 13 ticks remaining to go ahead 74-73. In the final seconds Trinity went back on top as Nari Garrett scored on a put-back with five seconds left. However the Trolls did not retain the top spot as the Tigers scored on a long three-pointer at the buzzer to snatch the win away from the Trolls.

Overall the Trolls shot .450 percent from the floor, .462 percent from the arc, .and .900 percent from the line. Olivet Nazarene was .449 percent from the field, .615 percent (8-of-13) from the three-point line, and .862 percent from the line. Trinity had 31 rebounds and the Tigers had 25. Garrett ended with 15 points and eight rebounds and Hurt had 15 points and five assists. Also in double-figure scoring was Juozas Balciunas with 13, Caleb Jonkman with 12, and Aaron Johnson with 11. Christian Cantu ended with four assists and five rebounds.

The Trolls will host St. Ambrose University on February 14 in their next conference game.
