Trolls Defeat Holy Cross

The Trolls came away with an upset victory in a conference game at Holy Cross College (Notre Dame, Indiana). After trailing at the half, Trinity built a double digit lead in the second period. In the final minutes of the game they had to protect that lead and they held off the Saints for a 66-64 victory. With the win the team is 7-16 overall and 3-10 in the CCAC.

The Trolls established a 10-7 lead in the first period, but Holy Cross went on a 15-to-2 run to take over the lead at 22-12. In the final two minutes of the period the Trolls were still behind by double-digits, but they finished out the half on a six point run to trail by only four, 31-27, at the half.

Trinity controlled the first six minutes of the second half and allowed the Saints only one basket. In that stretch the Trolls added 17 points to take a 44-33 lead.  Trinity continued to hold a sizable lead until the Holy Cross pulled to within four points with four minutes to play.  The difference closed to within two points, but the Trolls quickly went back ahead by six at 66-60 with two minutes to play. Trinity did not score again in the remaining time. The Saints hit two free throws with a minute left and then, after a turnover by Trinity, they scored on their next possession to make it 66-64. The Trolls did not let the Saints get any closer and held onto the win.

The Trolls ended the game with a .531 field goal percentage, a .500 three point percentage at 9-of-18, and a 1.000 free throw percentage. Holy Cross shot .510 percent from the field, .267 percent from the arc, and .444 percent from the line. Juozas Balciunas scored nearly half the team’s points with a 32. Nate Hurt had 10 points and three assists. Nari Garrett had eight points and six rebounds.

The team continues conference action on January 27 in a home contest with Governors State University at 3 pm.
