Trinity Grabs Win at IU-South Bend

The Trolls got boost with a conference win at Indiana University-South Bend (South Bend, Indiana), the team which was directly above them in the standings. In the first half each team had their share of the lead and at the half the score was tied at 37-37. Trinity took control in the second period and went ahead by double digits. After holding off a run by the Titans in the final minutes, the team came away with a 76-72 win. The victory ends a six game losing streak for the Trolls and makes the team 6-14 overall and 2-8 in the CCAC.

The Trolls took the early lead in the game and held the top spot on the scoreboard through the opening nine minutes. The Titans tied the game at 18-18 and throughout the rest of the half the score was tied four more times, including the 37-37 deadlock at the half.

After another tie at 39-39 at the start of the second period, the Trolls went on a 16-to-6 run to create a 10-point gap with 13 minutes to play.  Trinity continued to control the scoreboard and went ahead by as many as 13 points with seven minutes left.

Trinity’s 10 point advantage, 72-62, with five minutes left was threatened when IU-South Bend scored the next eight points to make at two point difference with a minute to play. The Trolls’ denied the Titans in their next possession and made it a two possession game when Juozas Balciunas hit two free throws. IU-South Bend connected on two charity throws with 14 seconds left to come back to within two points, but Caleb Jonkman answered with two good free throws to keep the gap at four and secure the win.  

The Trolls ended the game at .441 percent from the floor, .304 percent from the arc, and .750 percent from the line. IU-South Bend was .415 percent from the field, .320 percent from the three-point line, and .800 percent from the charity stripe. The Trolls had 33 rebounds and the Titans had 40. Balciunas led the team with 24 points and four rebounds. Jonkman added 21 points and five boards. Nate Hurt was also in double-figure scoring with 11 points and he had the team high four assists. Nari Garrett contributed eight points, six rebounds, and four blocks.

Trinity’s next contest is on January 17 at home at 7:30 pm against Calumet College of St. Joseph.
