Victory Slips Away from Trolls

In the semester break the Trolls took a short trip to take on Indiana University-Northwest (Gary, Indiana) in a non-conference game. Trinity held the lead for a large portion of the game and was ahead by two points, 43-41, at the half. They continued to hold a slight advantage in the second half, but could not hold onto it in the final minutes and ended in a two point loss at 81-79. The team falls to a 5-10 record.

The Trolls had a strong start and connecting on five of their first five three-pointers, they jumped to a10 point lead in the opening six minutes. The team continued to use the long range shot and nailed three more treys before they missed from that line. With 11 minutes left the Trolls held a 31-23 lead. The remaining time was filled with scoring runs. First IU-Northwest went on an 11 point run to take the lead. Trinity answered with the next 10 points to go back on top at 41-34. In the final 3:30 of the half the RedHawks posted a 7-to-2 run to close the gap to 43-41 at the break.

Trinity continued to shot well with a .500 percent for the game. However the RedHawks were also very accurate at .556 percent. As a result neither team could pull away and the lead went back and forth in the second half. With 12 minutes left the Trolls took the lead and, except for one brief moment, they held it for 10 minutes. With two minutes left IU-Northwest scored to take the top spot at 80-79. That score held until the final 30 seconds when the RedHawks connected on one free throw to make it a two point gap. The Trolls had the last possession, but could not get their attempt to fall.

For the game Trinity connected on 15 of their 25 three-point attempts and scored 45 points from the arc. The RedHawks out-scored the Trolls at the line with 17 points there to the Trolls’ six. Caleb Jonkman led the team with 24 points, hitting six of his 10 three-point attempts. He also had three assists. Aaron Johnson was also accurate from the arc at 4-of-4 for 12 points. Nate Hurt was one point away from a double double with nine points and 10 assists. Juozas Balciunas had 16 points and Nari Garrett had 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Trolls return to conference action on December 16 in a home game with Roosevelt University at 3 pm.
