Trinity Posts Victory Over East West

After a low scoring first half, the Trolls had a strong second half performance to post a non-conference win over East West University (Chicago, Illinois). The scoring came slowly in the first period and at the intermission Trinity only had 21 points and trailed 29-21. In the second half the team nearly doubled their first half production to take the lead and walk away with a 60-51 win. The Trolls improve to 5-8 overall.

Trinity shot .304 percent in the first half and seven minutes into the game only had made one basket. They fell behind by double digits and with 4:30 to play trailed by as many as 12 points. With three minutes left in the period the score was 29-21 and that is where is remained at the half.

The Trolls quickly turned things around in the second period and in the opening three minutes they had made up the scoring difference to tie the game at 29-29.  Over the next eight minutes the score was tied four more times. On two free throws by Caleb Jonkman with eight minutes left Trinity took a 43-41 lead and did not give it up for the rest of the game.

Trinity used an 11-to-3 run to post an eight point lead and with four minutes left had the gap to 10 points at 54-44. In the remaining time they held off the Phantoms and finished with the nine point win.

For the game the Trolls ended with a .392 field goal percentage and were .882 percent (18-of-22) from the line. East West shot .377 percent from the field and .636 percent from the charity stripe. Trinity had 37 rebounds to the Phantoms’ 30. Nari Garrett posted a double double of 15 points and 12 boards. Jonkman led the scoring with 21 while also grabbing seven boards and handing out five assists.  Juozas Balciunas had 10 points and Nate Hurt had five assists.

The Trolls return to conference action on December 9 in a game at St. Ambrose University at 3 pm.
