Trinity Defeats Calvin

It was an exciting atmosphere on Fall Fest Weekend as the Trolls hosted Calvin College (Grand Rapids, Michigan) in front of a full house at the DeVos Center.  Trinity led through most of the first half and slowly extended their lead to a 35-22 advantage at the break. The Trolls continued to stay on top until late in the game when Calvin tied the game three times. Trinity answered each time and took control to come away with the 71-63 win.

Through the first 12 minutes the teams were never separated by more than five points. With 7:23 to play the Trolls had a 22-20 lead and held the Knights without another basket until the final seconds.  During those minutes the Trolls added 13 points and by the break they had a 13 point lead.

Trinity continued to stay on top in the second half. With 13 minutes left Calvin cut the difference to six points, but the Trolls quickly went back ahead by 11. The Knights fought back and with six minutes to play they tied the game at 56-56. The teams traded buckets and were in a 60-60 deadlock with 3:30 left. On a pair of three throws by Juozas Balciunas with 1:42 left the Trolls took the two-point lead.  Hitting the necessary free throws down the stretch the Trolls held onto their lead and did not let Calvin back into the game.

The Trolls ended the game with a .387 field goal percentage and Calvin was .362 percent. Trinity connected on 17-of-21 from the line and the Knights were 15-of-24. The Trolls grabbed 12 steals and forced Calvin into 18 turnovers. Balciunas led the team with 20 points and seven rebounds. Caleb Jonkman had 17, Nari Garrett had 13, and Nate Hurt had 12. Garrett led the rebounding with nine.

The Trolls continue their non-conference action on November 6 in a contest at Siena Heights University at 7 pm EST.
