Trolls Narrowly Miss Out at St. Ambrose

In a conference game on the road the Trolls came up just short of a victory over St. Ambrose University (Davenport, Iowa).  The team put only 23 points on the board in the first half and trailed by six, 29-23, at the break.  Trinity had the game tied midway through the second period and was on the verge of taking over, but could not get that edge. In the end they came up three points shy of the win with a 66-63 final. The team is now 8-13 overall and 4-9 in the CCAC.

Playing without senior captain Jordan Perry, who leads the team in scoring, the Trolls knew they would have to be solid in all-areas of play and keep the Fighting Bees from getting to the hoop. In the first period Trinity made only eight field goals and had the offensive struggles, but they held St. Ambrose to only ten field goals and .303 percent shooting.

While Trinity had the lead in the opening minutes they had scored only seven points 12 minutes into the game and fall behind at 16-7. Over the next three minutes they doubled their offensive production and trailed by four at 18-14. By the intermission they were in a six point gap.

The Trolls continued to trail by a handful of points in first ten minutes of the second half. On an 11-point run they briefly took over the lead at 49-45 with 8:36 to play. St. Ambrose responded with a 14-to-2 run that left the Trolls down by eight with five minutes to play.

Trinity continued to attack in the final minutes. A three-pointer by Juozas Balciunas with 2:11 left had them within two at 60-58. With less than a minute left Trey Johnson kept the game alive on a lay-up that had the Trolls to within three at 63-60. The Bees scored the next three points on the line to extend their lead to six. A final trey at the buzzer made the final a three-point difference.

The Trolls ended the game shooting .361 percent from the field and .714 percent from the line. St. Ambrose was .375 percent from the floor and .619 percent from the charity stripe. Trinity had 34 rebounds and St. Ambrose had 51. Myles Birgans led the team with 16 points. Balciunas added 14 points and Caleb Jonkman had 13. Johnson had eight points and eight rebounds.

Trinity continues conference action on January 25 at Olivet Nazarene University at 7:30 pm.
