Trinity Takes Down IU-Northwest

The Trolls rang out 2016 with a victory over Indiana University-Northwest (Gary, Indiana) in a non-conference contest.  Trinity had a one-point lead at the half, but ended in with a 10-point win at 79-69. The win is the third in a row for the Trolls who close out the calendar year at 5-9.

The first part of the game seesawed back and forth and with seven minutes to play in the first period the score was tied at 25-25. The Redhawks went ahead by as many as five points, but with a three-pointer at the buzzer by Myles Birgans the Trolls went into the locker room with a 38-37 half-time lead.

The Trolls out-scored the Redhawks 14-to-6 in the first seven minutes of the second period to build a nine-point lead. Trinity continued to hold the top spot and midway through the period had a double-digit cushion. With three minutes left the team was ahead 71-60 and, although IU-Northwest cut the difference to six, the Trolls went 8-for-8 from the line in the remaining time to secure the victory.

Trinity shot .492 percent from the floor, .273 percent from the arc, and .929 percent from the line. IU-Northwest was .403 percent from the field, .263 percent from the three-point line, and .750 percent from the free throw line. The Trolls were out-rebounded by one. The Trolls had four players in double-digit scoring with Jordan Perry with 20 points, Myles Birgans at 19, Jouzas Balciunas with 18, and Caleb Jonkman at 15. Perry was the top rebounder with seven while Ben Brinks and Balciunas each had six. Balciunas also had six assists and Jonkman had five.

The Trolls play next on January 3 in a conference game at Holy Cross College at 7:30 pm EST.
