Trolls Face Tough Competition at Bethel Invitational

The Trolls competed in a very strong field of NAIA schools at the Bethel College Invitational. On the course at St. Patrick’s County Park in South Bend, Indiana, were five Top 25, including three top 10, NAIA women’s team and six Top 25, including four top 15, men’s team.  For the Trolls the women’s team, who is receiving votes, finished in seventh place of 14 teams and the men took fifth place of 14 teams.

In the women’s race five of the teams that placed higher than the Trolls were ranked above them in the standings. Posting her lowest time of the season, Megan DeWeerd led the team with an 18:34.9. She finished in 11th place overall of the 189 competitors.  Nicole Syverson was in the top 35 with a 33rd place finish as she crossed the line at 19:23.3

The next three runners for the Trolls were Hope Fathman in 49th at 19:46, Allie Boss in 63rd at 20:01.8, and Mikayla VanLaan in 21:20.9 in 105th.

With their fifth place finish the men’s team defeated two Top 25 teams. The top five runners for the Trolls all finished under 28 minutes and were in the top 60 runners in the field of 178. Nick Heidinger led the team with a 27:17.3 for 39th place overall. Two seconds and two places back was Brantley VanOverloop in 41st place at 27:19.5. Another two seconds later Caleb DeWeerd crossed the line at 27:21.3 for 43rd place.

Andrew Dobrescu was the team’s No. 4 runner and he took 49th place at 27:28.8. Kyle VanderPlaats took 49th as the fifth runner for the team with a 27:45.5.

The teams race next on October 20 at the Mount Mercy University Invitational in Iowa.
