Trolls Race in Midwest Intercollegiate Championships

The Trolls were in a strong field of competitors that raced in the Midwest Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Olivet Nazarene University at Aspen Ridge Golf Course in Bourbonnais, Illinois. The women’s field included 11 teams the Trolls took third place. There were 18 teams in the men’s race and the Trolls finished in the top half in ninth place.
    
Trinity’s women’s team made a strong showing with four runners in the top 20 in a field of 129 runners. Two of those runners were in the top five. Megan DeWeerd led the team with a third place finish. She posted a time of 19:03.98. Only three seconds back from DeWeerd was Nicole Syverson who clocked a 19:03.17. She came in fifth place.

Hope Fathman was the team’s third runner and took 15th place overall with a time of 20:05.69. Allie Boss finished three seconds behind Fathman at 20:08.13 and took 17th place.

The field in the men’s 8K race was larger than in the women’s race with a total of 237 runners. The top runner for the Trolls was Nick Heidinger who took 43rd place overall. He crossed the finish line with a time of 26:55. Brantley VanOverloop was the team’s second runner with a 60th place finish at 27:20.97.

The net three runners for the Trolls were also under 27 minutes. Andrew Dobrescu ran a 27:25.58 for 66th place, Caleb DeWeerd recorded a 27:36.17 for 74th place, and Kyle VanderPlaats finished at 27:51.54 for 83rd place.

The teams will compete again in a week at Bethel College on October 5.
