Women Win and Men Take Third at Purdue-Northwest Classic

The second meet of the season for the Trolls was at the Purdue University-Northwest Classic in Westville, Indiana. It was a stellar day for the women’s team which took first place of the five competing schools. The team had five runners finish in the top 10 to secure the victory. The men’s team was in the top half of their field as they finished in third place of six teams.

In the women’s 5K race of 60 runners, the Trolls took five of the top 10 places, including the first two spots. Megan DeWeerd outdistanced the field to win the race with a time of 19:02. Teammate Nicole Syverson was only six seconds back to finish in second place at 19:08.8. Those two runners were nearly a minute ahead of the third place competitor.

Also in the top five was Allie Boss who finished in 4th overall at 20:11. Hope Fathman came in 7th place with a time of 20:23.4. Coming in 10th place was Mikayla VanLaan at 20:15.7.

Also factoring in the scoring was Corrie Jacobi in 11th place at 21:25.5 and Annie Rangel in 16th place at 21:56.2.

The men’s team had two runners finish in the top 10 and another two in the top 15 in a field of 49 competitors. Caleb DeWeerd led the way for the team with a third place finish. He crossed the line at 26:16.8 in the 8K race. Brantley VanOverloop ran a 26:44.6 and was 7th overall.

The other two runners in the top 15 were Andrew Dobrescu in 11th and Nick Heidinger in 14th. The finished with times of 27:19.2 and 27:29.0 respectively.

The final place team scorers for the Trolls were in the top half of the field. Ryan Mathes was 19th at 28:38.4, Kyle VanderPlaats was 21st at 28:54.4, and Kevin Courtney was 24th at 29:43.3.

The teams will compete next on September 28 in the Midwest Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Olivet Nazarene University on September 28.
