Trolls Finish in Top Five at St. Francis

The 2018 cross country season began at the University of St. Francis Twilight Invitational.  Both the women’s and men’s team ran the 5K course at Channahon Community Park.  The women’s team, which is ranked No. 24 in the NAIA preseason poll, finished in fourth place of the nine schools competing and the men were fifth of 12 schools.

Even without one of their top runners, the women’s team had a good showing. They placed two runners in the top 10 of the 109 total competitors. Megan DeWeerd led the way with a sixth place overall finish with a time of 18:55.1. Nicole Syverson was only a few seconds behind at 19:00.6 for eighth place.

The third runner for the Trolls was Hope Fathman who was 22nd overall. She crossed the line at 19:52.5. Freshman b made a strong showing in her first collegiate race with a 32nd place finish at 20:15.1.

Rounding out the top seven team places for the Trolls were Corrie Jacobi in 40th overall, Mikayla Van Laan at 48th overall, and Annie Rangel at 55th.

The men’s 5K race had a total of 139 runners. Finishing in the top 20 were Brantley VanOverloop and Caleb DeWeerd. VanOverloop took 17th overall and led the team with a time of 16:20.3. DeWeerd was two seconds back at 16:22.8 and in 19th place.

Nick Heidinger was the next runner for the team with a time of 16:54.1. He crossed the line in 30th place. The next runners for the Trolls were a pair of freshman. Andrew Dobrescu ran a 17:01.2 for 37th place and Ryan Mathes came in around 17:30. (His official time is not listed in the final results.)

The final scoring places for the Trolls came from Kyle VanderPlaats in 54th and Kevin Courtney in 56th.

The Trolls run next on September 7 at the Purdue University-Northwest Invitational.
