Trolls Compete in NCCAA Championships

The Trolls were in a total field of 18 teams that competed in the NCCAA Cross Country Championships at the Choctaw Trails in Jackson, Mississippi.  In the 5K race the women’s team finished in fourth place overall of the 13 Division I programs and had two athletes earn All-American status. The men’s team took eighth of 13 teams.  

The fourth place finish for the women came only behind three NCAA Div. II programs. Trinity’s top runners did not disappoint as Megan DeWeerd and April Van Ryn were second and third respectively in the field of 89 runners.  DeWeerd ran her second fastest time of the season at 17:41.11. VanRyn was only four seconds behind her at 17:45.02 with her best time of the season. Both of these athletes earned All-American recognition.

The women had two other runners finish under the 20 minute mark. Hope Fathman came in at 19:47.69 for 30th place. Just seconds behind her was Nicole Syverson at 19:49.48 for 32nd place.

Rounding out the team places for the Trolls was Mikayla VanLaan in 43rd place, Corrie Jacobi in 74th place, and Barb McAndrews in 80th place.

The men’s team had four of their runners place in the top half of the field of 97 competitors. Brantley VanOverloop ran one of his best times of the season at 27:11.39 and led the team with a 23rd place finish. Nick Heidinger was the team’s No. 2 runner with a 28th place finish. He crossed the line at 27:24.15. Coming in at 27:44.89 was Caleb DeWeerd for 36th place. Also in the top half was Kyle VanderPlaats who was 43rd at 28:00.20.

The final team finishers for the Trolls were Kevin Courtney in 59th, Luke Boss in 71st, and Cole Akimoff in 73rd.

On November 18 Megan DeWeerd and April VanRyn will compete in the NAIA National Championships in Vancouver, Washington.
