Trolls Race in CCAC Championships

The Trolls tested their training and abilities in the CCAC Championships hosted by Judson University at Wing Park Golf Course in Elgin, Illinois. Taking on the teams in the conference, the women’s team finished in third place overall of the 12 teams and came up just a few points short of a second place finish. The men’s team was sixth of 13 teams.

The women’s team had a great day in their race and posted the fastest overall team time. With 79 points they were only six points out of second place and qualifying as a team for the NAIA national meet.  They did have two runners individually qualify with top performances. Megan DeWeerd and April VanRyn finished in second and third place overall of the 125 runners and will compete at the national level.  DeWeerd crossed the finish line with a time of 18:19.9 and VanRyn came in at 18:45.5. Both runners earned All-Conference honors and VanRyn was named the Freshman of the Year.

As a top 15 finishers, Nicole Syverson also earned All-Conference honors. She finished in 15th place overall and posted a time of 20:02.8.

The women’s team had two more competitors in the top 30 as Mikayla VanLaan took 29th place at 20:26.2 and just seconds behind her at 20:30.3 was Hope Fathman for 30th place.

On the men’s side there were 13 teams overall and 140 runners. The Trolls were led by Brantley VanOverloop who finished in 29th place overall. He crossed the line at 27:44.3. The next group for the team was within seconds of each other. Kyle VanderPlaats posted a time of 28:02.2 for 33rd place, Nick Heidinger ran 28:10.5 for 39th place, and Caleb DeWeeerd ran 28:11.3 for 40th place.

The teams will compete in the NCCAA Championships in Jackson, Mississippi on November 11.  Megan DeWeerd and April VanRyn will race in the NAIA Championships in Vancouver, Washington on November 18.
