Trolls Race in Midwest Intercollegiates

Cross country runners swarmed Aspen Ridge Golf Course in Bourbonnais, Illinois for the Midwest Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Olivet Nazarene University.  In their largest meet of the season, the Trolls joined hundreds of athletes from schools of varying divisions to compete in the 5K and 8K races. Overall the No. 20 women’s team finished in fifth place of 10 teams and the men’s team was ninth of 16 schools.

The women’s team once again had two of the top runners as Megan DeWeerd and April VanRyn finished second and third respectively in a field of 146 runners. The pair finished just seconds apart with DeWeerd clocking an 18:32.3 and VanRyn finishing at 18:36.8. They were nine seconds back from the winning runner from the University of Chicago.

With times under 21 minutes and in the top 50 were the team’s No. 3 and 4 runners. Nicole Syverson came in 31st overall at 20:04.0 and Hope Fathman was 42nd at 20:32.7.

All of the runners on the men’s team posted faster times than their previous 8K race this season. The team was led by freshman Caleb DeWeerd with a time of 26:38.3. He finished in 41st place of the 244 runners on the course. His time is good enough to rank him in the top 10 best times in Trinity’s records book.

Nick Heidinger was just 17 seconds behind DeWeerd at 26:55.5 and nine places back for a 50th place overall. Brantley VanOverloop finished the course in 58th place at 27:08.2 Also in the top 100 runners was Kyle VanderPlaats in 95th place with a time of 27:44.9.

The Trolls will compete next at Benedictine University on October 6.
