Trolls Take Losses on First Day

On the first day of competition at the NCCAA Baseball World Series in Easley, South Carolina, the Trolls played in two games. No. 6 Trinity opened their pool play in morning game against No. 3 Warner University (Lake Wales, Florida).  It was tied score until the seventh inning when Trinity fell behind and took the eventual 9-6 loss. In the evening game the team faced No. 2 Bluefield College (Bluefield, Virginia) and suffered a 13-4 defeat.

It was a shaky start for Trolls in the first game as Warner had three consecutive hits in the first inning and scored on run on an error. The team did not allow that start to set the tone, and they settled into the game. They got that run back in the bottom of the second when they scored on a failed pick-off attempt and took the lead in the fourth inning when they scored again.

Warner went back on the top of the scoreboard in the fifth inning when they scored two runs to make it 3-2. Trinity quickly answered in the bottom half as Chris Baker singled up the middle to score Brandon Riemersma, who got on base with a single.

Heading into the seventh inning the score remained tied at 3-3. Warner took over the lead on a two-run homer and added two more runs in the inning to go ahead 7-3.  Trinity loaded the bases in the bottom half and scored one run on a sacrifice fly by Baker.

In the top of the ninth Warner was able to extend their lead to make it 9-4. The Trolls were not going to go away quietly and added two on a homer by Alex Nisle. They had one other on base before the inning ended and they took the loss.

For the game Trinity had 12 hits and Warner had 16. Austin Wood led the team with three hits while Will Kulcher and Riemersma each had two. Both Baker and Nisle ended with two RBI. Mike McIntyre was the starting pitcher and threw through six innings. Christian Howell entered as a reliever and got the loss.

The Trolls quickly got on the board in the night game as they scored on a single by Nisle in the top of the first inning. A solo homer by Bluefield in the bottom half tied the game. The Rams took over the lead in the third inning with another two runs to make the score 3-1.

With back-to-back-to-back doubles by Sam Herzog, Baker, and Tholl in the top of the fifth the Trolls scored two runs to make it 3-3. Bluefield answered with three in that inning and once again went ahead at 6-3. The Rams added two more in the sixth on a two-run homer to open the gap to 8-3.

Trinity edged a little closer in the seventh inning when another double by Tholl brought in one run. The Trolls stayed four runs back until the eighth inning. In the bottom of the eighth, Bluefield added five runs to open up a 13-4 lead. Trinity did not anything going in the top of the ninth and took the nine run loss.

The Trolls ended with nine hits and Bluefield had 11. Baker and Tholl each recorded three and Tholl led the team with two RBI. Dan Vos took the loss on the mound with five innings pitched.

The Trolls play again on Thursday, May 23, at 10 am ET against the College of the Ozarks (MO).
