Trolls Fall in CCAC Championship Opener

The No. 4 Trolls started the CCAC Championship at Joliet Route 66 Stadium in a game with No. 5 Robert Morris University (Chicago, Illinois). Each team had their share of the lead the nine-inning game and the score was tied heading into the ninth inning. The Eagles put a run on the board in the top of the ninth, and, although the Trolls loaded the bases in the bottom half, they did not score to end with the 4-3 loss. The team will move into the elimination bracket and play next on May 4 at 1 pm.

With Christian Howell on the mound the Trolls did not allow the Eagles on the base path through the first two innings. Robert Morris scored one run in the third inning on a hit and an error to take the lead. The Eagles gained one more in the top of the fourth, but Trinity came back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. With two runners on base Austin Wood singled to the left side to drive the runs in.

The Trolls took over the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Josh Caceres singled to score one run to make it 3-2. Robert Morris answered that run in the top of the sixth to put the game into a 3-3 deadlock.

The score remained tied through the next two innings. In the top of the ninth with two outs the Eagles singled to the right side and a runner scored from second base to give the Eagles a lead.  Wood led off the bottom of the inning with a hit. After a sacrifice and two walks the Trolls had the bases loaded and threatened to score.  However those runners were left standing on the bags as the next two batters were retired.

For the game the Trolls had seven hits and Robert Morris had nine. Caceres, Wood, and Will Kulcher each had two hits with Wood recording two RBI. Howell pitched through the first eight innings and John VanderWall finished the game for the loss.

The Trolls will take on the loser of the No. 1 Saint Xavier University vs No. 8 Indiana University-South Bend game at 1 pm on Saturday, May 3.
