Trolls Defeat St. Francis

In the final game of the regular season the Trolls played the University of St. Francis (Joliet, Illinois) at Route 66 Stadium.  As has been a pattern as of late, Trinity had one big inning that made a difference in the game. With six runs in the second inning the team took a lead that they did not give up for the rest of the game and ended with an 8-5 win. With the victory the Trolls posted a 2-1 advantage in the series with the Fighting Saints. Trinity ends their regular season with a 27-18-1 overall record and in fourth place in the CCAC at 18-10-1.

Most of the scoring came early in the game as St. Francis scored three runs in the bottom of the first and Trolls scored six in the top of the second. The first run for Trinity walked across the plate and the next two scored on a ground out and an error. A single by Jake Tholl brought two more in and Alex Nisle followed with a double to score the sixth run of the inning to give the Trolls a 6-3 lead.

Over the next eight innings St. Francis had bases loaded three times, but the Trolls allowed only one run in those situations. That run was one of two the Fighting Saints added in the game and both of those runs were scored after the Trolls scored two in the sixth inning. One of Trinity’s runs in the sixth inning came on a triple by Sam Herzog and another on a single up the middle by Tholl.

The Trolls ended the game with 10 hits while St. Francis had six. Tholl and Liam Blake each recorded two hits and Herzog had two RBI. The pitching was done by committee with six different pitchers on the mound with each throwing one or two innings. Mike McIntyre threw two innings and got the win and Joseph Kabbes was on the mound for the final 2.1 innings for the save.

The Trolls will advance to the CCAC Championship which begins on May 3. The seeding and tournament schedule will be release on May 2.
