Trinity Grabs Double-header Victories

The Trolls completed the sweep of St. Ambrose University (Davenport, Iowa) with two victories in a home double-header. Trinity scored in almost every inning of the first game in route to a 10-3 victory. The second game had a total of 41 hits and 43 runs and multiple runs in every inning. In the end the Trolls posted a 22-21 win with walk-off homer. The Trolls are 25-15-1 overall and 16-7-1 in the CCAC.

St. Ambrose starting the scoring in the first game with three runs in the top of the second inning. However that was the only inning in which they scored. The Trolls also started their scoring in the second inning with a home run by Josh Caceres. With a two-run homer by Jake Tholl in the third inning Trinity had tied the game at 3-3.

Trinity continued to add runs in each of the net three innings while holding the Fighting Bees. By the end of the sixth inning the Trolls had a 10-3 lead. St. Ambrose did not threaten in the top of the seventh and the Trinity took the win.

For the game the Trolls had 11 hits and St. Ambrose had seven.  Caceres led the team with three hits while Tholl, Alex Nisle, and Austin Wood each had two. Ryan Stejskal ended the game with three RBI. Dan Vos registered the win on the mound.

The second game was a high scoring affair with each team having their share of the lead. The team’s combined for 41 hits and there were a total of seven home runs throughout the nine innings.

The Trolls took the lead first with four runs in the bottom of the first. Those runs were scored off doubles by Will Kulcher and Wood. St Ambrose took over the lead with 11 hits, including two homers, and eight runs in the next two innings. A two-run home run by Wood in the bottom of the third helped the Trolls to three more runs to pull to within one at 8-7.

Trinity kept up the scoring and by the end of the fifth inning had a 13-8 lead. The game went the other direction over the next two innings when the Fighting Bees added five runs in each the sixth and seventh innings and had a 18-15 lead at the end of seven.

The Trolls continued the offensive attack and in the bottom of the eighth they loaded the bases and scored two on hit by Tholl. Another run walked across the plate on hit by pitch with bases loaded to tie the game at 18-18.

With two doubles and two singles in the top of the ninth the Fighting Bees added three runs to go back on top and put the pressure on the Trolls’ final at bat. Trinity rose to the occasion. Wood started the bottom half with a solo homer. With two outs and runners on first and second, Tholl sent a blast over the left center fence that scored three runs for the walk-off win.

For the game Trinity had 20 hits and St. Ambrose had 21. Tholl, Nisle, Kulcher, Wood, and Liam Blake each had three hits. Tholl registered eight RBI and Wood had six. Joseph Kabbes finished the game with the final three innings for the win.

The team is next in action on April 24 at Indiana University-South Bend.
