Trolls Cruise By Red Lions

The Trolls did not have too much trouble with Lincoln Christian University (Lincoln, Illinois) in a non-conference game. After a 3-2 start through three innings, Trinity scored 14 runs in the next three innings and ended the game on the mercy rule after seven innings with a 17-5 final. With the victory the Trolls move above the .500 mark again with a 15-14 record.

Lincoln Christian was the first team on the scoreboard when they scored two runs in the second inning. The Trolls took over the lead in the bottom of the third inning when doubles by Chris Baker and Alex Nisle brought in three runs.

The game started to get lopsided in the fourth inning when the Trolls added five runs to go ahead 8-2. In that inning Trinity had six hits, including doubles by Jake Tholl, Nisle, and Liam Blake. Lincoln Christian scored one run in the top of the fifth, but Trinity tacked on another five in the bottom to make it a 13-3 game.  Three of the runs in that inning came off a home run by Baker.

Each team scored in the sixth inning as Lincoln Christian got two in the top half and the Trolls got four in the bottom half. Trinity only had two hits in the inning as they walked in three runs and scored the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Will Kulcher.  When the Red Lions went three up and three down in the top of the seventh, the game ended on the mercy rule.

Trinity ended the game with a total of 18 hits and Lincoln Christian had four. Baker was 4-for-4 with five RBI. Frank Romano ended the game with three hits as did Blake. Tholl, Nisle, and Kulcher each recorded two hits. Jared Smaga got his first collegiate win as he pitched the first five innings.

The Trolls will be at home again on Friday, April 5, in a 3:30 pm game with Trinity International University.
