Trolls Split with Cougars

Trinity and Saint Xavier University (Chicago, Illinois) concluded their three games series with a double-header at Saint Xavier. The Trolls took the lead early in the first game and scored in five different innings for an 8-2 win.  The second nine inning game was a run and hit filled game in which the lead went back and forth.  The game was called due to darkness after the eighth inning with the Trolls down at 14-13. Trinity finished the series with the Cougars with a 1-2 record and move to 14-13 overall and 6-5 in the CCAC.

In the first game the Trolls handed the Cougars only their second CCAC loss of the season. A triple by Chris Baker in the first inning put the Trolls on the board. Alex Nisle followed with a double to make it 2-0. Saint Xavier got one back in the bottom half, but Trinity tacked on two more in the second to take a 4-1 lead.

With two runners on base in the fourth inning, the Trolls scored on a sacrifice bunt by Brent Norkus and on a single by Baker to increase their lead to 6-1. Saint Xavier scored in the bottom half, but that was the last run they got. A double by Austin Wood in the fifth drove in another run for the Trolls and single RBI by Nisle in sixth made it an 8-2 score.

For the game the Trolls had nine hits and Saint Xavier had eight. Nisle led the team with three hits while Baker had two. Each of those batters drove in two runs.  John VanderWall got the win with five innings on the mound.

The second game had a total of 27 runs and 33 hits and a total of 10 different pitchers on the mound between the two teams. The lead changed a few times and there were a couple of big innings in scoring.

The Trolls took the lead in the first inning on a two-run homer by Jake Tholl. In the top of the third the Trolls had three hits to score two more to go ahead 4-1. However in the bottom of that inning, the Cougars batted all through their order, plus one, to score five runs to take over the top spot at 6-4.

Trinity came right back in the fourth inning and with doubles by Sam Herzog and Baker and singles by Brandon Riemersma and Tholl the team scored three runs to regain the lead at 7-6. Saint Xavier managed one run in the bottom half to tie the game.

The 7-7 tie changed in the sixth inning when Trinity hit three doubles and two singles to keep the base path busy. Nisle started with a double and scored when he traded places with Josh Caceres who sent one to the center field fence. With two runners on base Ryan Stejskal hit a two-bagger to score the next two runs to give the Trolls an 11-7 lead. Trinity did not hold the lead long as the Cougars scored six runs in the bottom of the inning to make it a 13-11 score.

The Trolls were not finished as they loaded the bases in the seventh inning and scored twice on a single by Herzog to tie the game at 13-13. It was not until the eighth inning that Saint Xavier strung together three hits and scored one run to go ahead by one. The game ended there as the umpire called the game due to darkness at the end of the inning.

For the game Trinity had 15 hits and Saint Xavier had 18.  Tholl led the team with three hits and four RBI. Riemersma also had three hits and recorded two RBI while Herzog had two hits and two RBI. The Trolls saw four pitchers on the mound with the loss going to Joseph Kabbes who pitched the final inning.

The team continues conference action on April 2 with a home game against the Indiana University at 3:30 pm.
