Trinity and Judson Split Double-Header

The Trolls and the Eagles of Judson University (Elgin, Illinois) met in a double-header to complete their three game series. The games were played on Judson’s field, although Trinity was the home team. In the opening seven inning game both teams scored in the first inning to determine the final 2-1 win for the Trolls. Trinity could not get on the scoreboard in the second nine inning game and was shut-out with a 5-0 loss. The Trolls are now 12-10 overall and 4-2 in the CCAC.

In the first game the scoring was all done in the first inning. Six of Eagles’ first seven batters got on base in some manner in their first at bat. The Trolls did a good job of preventing those base runners from scoring as they gave up only one run and left the bases loaded as they retired the inning. In the bottom of the inning the Trolls started with a single by Will Kulcher, a double by Chris Baker, a single RBI by Jake Tholl, and RBI ground-out by Alex Nisle to score two runs and take the lead.

Through the rest of the game the Trolls only allowed three more base runners and had three innings in which they retired all three batters. The Trolls had the opportunity score in the second inning with bases loaded and in the fifth inning when they filled the bags again.

For the game the Trolls ended with seven hits and Judson had two. Tholl and Nisle each had two hits and a RBI. John VanderWall pitched through the first six innings for the win and Dan Vos finished the game and got the save.

Similar to the first game the scoring started in the first inning of the second game. Judson jumped out ahead with a two-run home run to take the early 2-0 lead.  The Eagles threatened again in the third inning with bases loaded, but were not allowed to score. The only other run in the game came in the fifth inning when Judson went up 3-0.

The Trolls were limited on the base path throughout the game and had only one hit in the first four innings.  Trinity had some success getting on the base path in the fifth inning, but did not get the ball out of the infield to move the runners. In the final four innings they had only two runners on base and did not threaten to score.

For the game Trinity had four hits and Judson had six. Josh Caceres led the team with two hits.  Bryan Martinez was the starter for the Trolls on the mound and recorded the loss.

The Trolls play next on March 27 in a double-header at Roosevelt University at 2 pm.
