Trolls Outscore the Eagles

A conference game between Trinity and Judson University (Elgin, Illinois) produced a total of 23 hits and 18 runs. The lead, in the game played at Judson, went back and forth, but in the end the Trolls came out on top with a 10-8 final. The victory is a start to the three game series the Trolls play against the Eagles this weekend.

It was a rocky start to the game for the Trolls as the first three Judson batters got on base and the fourth batter hit a grand slam to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead after one inning. The Trolls settled in for the next few innings and allowed only two more hits through the fourth.

It did not take the Trolls long to get on the board as they scored twice in the top of the second. In the fourth inning they loaded the bases and scored two on a single by Jake Tholl. With the bags full again another two runs came in a Josh Caceres double to give the team a 6-4 lead after four innings.

The Trolls scored one run in each the fifth and sixth innings, but Judson doubled that offensive production for two runs in the bottom of those innings to tie the game at 8-8.

Trinity went back on top in the eighth inning when a sacrifice fly by Austin Wood brought in a run.  A sacrifice to right field by Brandon Riemersma in the top of the ninth scored Sam Herzog, who started the inning with a single, and gave the team a 10-8 lead. The Trolls threatened to score more as they left the bases loaded.  Judson got a couple of runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, but the Trolls held them for the win.

For the game Trinity had 13 hits of which Alex Nisle had three and Chris Baker, Riemersma, and Tholl each had two. Mike McIntyre stepped to the mound for the final three innings for the win.

Trinity and Judson will play in a double-header on March 23, at 1 pm. The games, which were scheduled to be played at home, have been moved to Judson’s field.
