Trolls and Golden Eagles Split Results

In their second day in Florida the Trolls faced Cornerstone University (Grand Rapids, Michigan) in a double-header. The morning game was a 5-3 win for Trinity as they scored in the late innings to break a tied score. The Trolls never had the lead in the second game. They were within two runs after five innings, but ended in a 7-3 loss. The Trolls are 1-3 in their Florida trip and 4-6 overall.

In the opening game the Trolls were the first team on the board when Sam Herzog scored on a sacrifice bunt from Chris Baker in the top of the third inning. The team added two more runs in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Herzog and a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Riemersma. Their 3-0 lead disappeared in the bottom of the fourth when Cornerstone scored three runs on three hits and an error to tie the game.

Trinity kept up the offensive threat and a RBI single by Riemersma in the top of the sixth put them back on top. They added one more run in the seventh on a single by Austin Wood to go ahead 5-3. Holding the Golden Eagles off the base path in the final two innings, the Trolls secured the win.

For the game the Trolls had four hits with Wood claiming two. John VanderWall pitched through five innings for the win and Christian Howell came in for the save.

The Trolls trailed throughout the entire second game, but made it interesting in the middle innings. Down 2-0, Trinity first got on the scoreboard on a single RBI by Baker in the third inning.  Cornerstone added two runs in the top of the fifth, but Trinity kept close when they answered with two in the bottom half to make it 4-3.  Consecutive singles by Ryan Stejskal, Will Kucher, and Baker loaded the bases and the two runs scored when Jake Tholl took a walk and Alex Nisle grounded out.

Cornerstone extended their lead with a run in the sixth and another two runs in the seventh to go ahead 7-3. The Trolls got runners on base in their final two innings, but could not move them around the bases.

For the game each team had eight hits. Baker and Herzog led the Trolls with two hits each. Bryan Martinez pitched for five innings for the loss.

The Trolls and the Golden Eagles will meet again on Friday, March 8, in a 9:15 am ET double-header.
