Tournament Run Ends

For the second time in two days the Trolls fell to Clarke University (Dubuque, Iowa) in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round.  In an elimination bracket game Trinity lost with an 8-1 final at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport, Tennessee. The Trolls gave up six runs early in the game and could not make up that gap. With the loss the team was eliminated from the tournament and they ended their season with a 35-23 record.

The majority of the damage in the game came in the second inning when Clarke had six hits to score six runs. The rest of the game became a defensive battle as both teams were limited on the base path and neither team scored for the next four innings.

The Trolls got on the board and prevented the shut-out in the top of the seventh inning. Austin Wood led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  A hit by Jake Toll put Wood on third base and a failed pick-off attempt allowed him to score.

Clarke answered that run in the bottom of the inning and gained one more run in the eighth inning on a hit and an error to make it 8-1.

In their final at bat Trinity loaded the bases to put pressure on Clarke. However they were not able to convert those base runners to scorers as the game ended.

Overall Trinity and Clarke each had 10 hits for the game. However the Trolls struck out 14 times. Tyler Sroczynski, Tholl, and Dan Budde each had two hits. Vanderlee was the starter and pitched 1.1 innings for the loss. John VanderWall finished the game, giving up four hits and two runs.

The team’s post-season play in the Opening Round was the baseball program’s second NAIA national tournament appearance. They received the bid as the CCAC Tournament Champions.
