Trolls Win in Late Game Rally

The Trolls stay alive in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round with an exciting bottom of the ninth inning win.  Taking on No. 3 Madonna University (Livonia, Michigan) at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport, Tennessee, the No. 5 Trolls trailed until the final inning. In the bottom of the ninth the Trolls tied the game and, with bases loaded, they executed a suicide squeeze bunt to score the game winner with a 7-6 final. The Trolls will continue play in the elimination bracket with a game against Clarke University at 6 pm EST.

Trinity gave up two runs in the top of the first inning and trailed through the rest of the game until their final at bat. Down 4-1, a two-run homer by Jake Tholl in the bottom of the sixth brought the Trolls to within a run. However Madonna got those two runs back in the top of the seventh to make it 6-3.

The Trolls were not ready to have their season end and started to rally. They threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning with bases loaded. With two outs in the eighth inning the team had the bases full again on three straight walks. Tyler Sroczynski delivered a timely hit to drive in two runs to make it 6-5.

Trinity held the Crusaders in the top of the ninth and then went to work in the bottom half. Austin Wood and Alex Nisle started with singles to get on base. One out later Dan Budde singled to left field to drive in the tying run. With a stolen base by Budde and an intentional walk for Kyle VanKalker, the team had the bases loaded. On a one-one count Morgan Nowitzki put down the bunt and Wood slid in to beat the play at home for the walk-off win.

For the game Trolls ended with 13 hits and Madonna had 10. Sroczynski, Wood, Nisle, Budde, and Nowitzki each had two hits. Richard Yelnick started the game on the mound and went 6.2 innings and Kyle Doney finished the game for the win.
