Trolls are CCAC Baseball Tournament Champs!

The Trolls claimed the CCAC Tournament Championship title with a 9-7 victory over Judson University (Elgin, Illinois). Trinity posted a perfect record in the tournament, defeating four higher seeded teams.  In the championship game the Troll established an early 6-1 lead and held on for the victory. With the tournament title the team will advance to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round on May 14-17.

Trinity had a great start to the game and scored six runs in the first two innings. A single by Austin Wood drove in a run in the first inning to get things going and put the team on the scoreboard. Judson answered that run in the bottom of the inning, but the Trolls added five in the second inning to create a sizable lead. In the inning Wood accounted for two runs with another single.

Judson gained one run in each the fourth and fifth innings to close to 6-3.  The Trolls immediately got those runs back in the sixth inning on a RBI single by Chris Baker and a sacrifice fly by Wood.

Another RBI by Wood, his fifth of the game, on a single to left field in the eighth inning gave the Trolls a 9-3 lead.  Judson added one run and left bases loaded in the bottom half to move to 9-4.  The Eagles applied pressure in the bottom of the ninth when they scored three runs to close to within two.  They had the tying runs on base when a fly to left field was caught to stop their comeback and end the game in a Trinity victory.

The Trolls had a total of 15 hits for the game and Judson had 13. Wood, Baker, and Tyler Sroczynski each had three hits and Kyle Kolb and Dan Budde had two each. Richard Yelnick threw 7.1 innings for the win.

It is only the second NAIA National Championship appearance for the Trinity. The last time they advanced to the Opening Round was in the 2013 season. The qualifiers, location, and bracket for the Opening Round games will be released Thursday, May 10, at 3 pm.
