Florida Trip Starts with Two Wins

The Trolls opened their Florida Spring Break trip with a double-header against Cornerstone University (Grand Rapids, Michigan) in the RussMatt Invitational. The Trolls took over the first game in the late innings and posted an 8-2 win.  In the second game the score was tied after four innings. Trinity took the game in the sixth inning on a three-run homer to post the 6-3 victory.

Cornerstone was the first team on the board with a run in the first inning, but a double by Luke Weston in the second inning tied the game. The Golden Eagles went back ahead by in the third inning, but that run was their final one of the game.

Trinity gained the lead in the fourth inning with three runs on four hits. A two-run homer by Tyler Sroczynski in the fifth inning gave the Trolls a 6-2 lead.  The team continued to add runs in the fifth inning as two runners crossed the plate.  Cornerstone loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but did not score for the 8-2 final.

Trinity had a total of 16 hits for the game with Jake Tholl, Sroczynski, and Luke Weston with three each and three other players had two each. Weston, Sroczynski, and Chris Baker each had two RBI. Bryan Vanderlee pitched through the first six innings for the win.

In the second game of the double-header the teams traded runs as each scored in the second inning. Cornerstone scored twice in the third inning to take the lead, but the Trolls gained those back in the fourth inning. Tholl opened the inning with a home run and Alex Nisle singled to drive in the other run.

After holding Cornerstone for the next two innings, the Trolls took the lead in the bottom of the sixth with three runs.  With two outs and following two walks, Dan Budde sent one long for a three-run homer.  Closer Rory Gard retired the three batters in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Each team had five hits for the game and those five hits came from five different players for the Trolls. Gard stepped in for the final 1.1 innings for the win.

The Trolls will face Cornerstone in another double-header on March 7.
