Trolls Win on Senior Day

In their final home game of the season the Trolls upset Olivet Nazarene University (Bourbonnais, Illinois) with a 5-4 victory. Trinity started the game honoring the ten seniors on the team and then went on to post a win over one of the top CCAC teams. The team took over the lead in the fifth inning and did not let the Tigers get it back. The Trolls are 22-25 for the season and 20-15 in the CCAC.

The offense flowed for both teams with a total of 21 hits between the two teams. The long ball also was a factor as the Trolls scored four of their runs on two home runs and a triple.

Olivet Nazarene opened the game with a run in the 1st inning, but the Trolls answered that run when Tyler Sroczynski lead-off with a double, Zack Jones singled to advance him, and Stefano Belmonte singled to drive him in. The Tigers picked up another run in the 2nd inning on a solo homer for a 2-1 lead.

Olivet Nazarene took a 3-1 lead in the top of the 4th, but a season record breaking 11th homer by Alec Barnhart kept the team within one.  Trinity kept things going in the 5th inning when, with a runner on base, Jones sent one over the fence to five the Trolls the lead for the first time at 4-3.

The Trolls extended their lead in the 8th inning when Belmonte started things off with a double. Two outs later Kyle VanKalker tripled for the RBI and the 5-3 lead.

Jones moved from behind to the plate to the mound in the 9th inning to close the game after Richard Yelnick threw the first eight innings. With three hits in a row the Tigers scored one run and sat with runners on first and second.  The Trolls held those runners and retired the next three batters on two strike-outs and a ground-out to get the win.

Trinity recorded 12 hits for the game as Jones, Belmonte, and Chris Riemersma each had two. Jones also led the team with two RBI. Yelnick faced 30 batters with only one walk and six strikeouts for the win. Jones recorded his fifth save of the season.

The Trolls go to Olivet Nazarene University tomorrow for a 12:30 pm double-header.
