Trinity Gets One Against St. Francis
The Trolls and the Fighting Saints of the University of St. Francis (Joliet, Illinois) met in a three-game series. The first day of the match-up belonged to the Trolls as they took a 5-2 win against the top conference team. The second day belonged to St. Francis as the Trolls gave up the lead in the 7th inning of the first game for a 5-4 loss and were defeated 14-2 on the mercy rule after seven innings in the second game. The team is now 19-20 overall and 7-10 in the CCAC.
The single nine inning game on Friday was scoreless through the first six innings of play. In those innings St. Francis had the best opportunities with multiple runners on base. Trinity got things going in the 4th inning as they scored four runs to take the lead. Alec Barnhart and Chris Riemersma singled to get on base and a single by Kyle VanKalker drove in one run. Luke Weston followed with a home run that cleared the bases and put the Trolls ahead 4-0.
Zack Jones led off with a triple to start the 8th inning and scored on a hit up the middle by Stefano Belmonte. The Saints got on the board in the bottom half on a lead-off solo homer and they added one more in the bottom of the 9th inning to push the final to 5-2.
The Trolls had nine hits for the game with Belmonte and Barnhart each grabbling two. Weston led the team with three RBIs. Tanner Reklaitis pitched through eight innings for the win and Jones stepped in for the save.
On their home field in the first game of the double-header the Trolls took the lead in the 2nd inning on a two run homer by Weston. St. Francis answered in the top of the 3rd to make it a 2-2 game. The Saints took a brief lead when they scored a run in the top of the 5th. However the Trolls loaded the bases in the bottom half and scored two on a single by Belmonte.
Heading into the final inning the Trolls held their 4-3 lead. With a runner on base St. Francis found a double to right field followed by a single to left field to score two runs and take over the lead. A single by Lance Lammers in the bottom half put a runner on base, but the inning ended on a line drive double play to the first baseman.
The Trolls had six hits for the game and they came from six different players. Jones stepped into close the final inning and got the loss.
In the second game the Trolls could not get things going while St. Francis scored in five of their at bats. Trailing 5-0, the Trolls first got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Lammers doubled to get on base and Tyler Sroczynski singled to bring him home.
After giving up three more runs in the 4th inning the Trolls scored their only other run in the bottom. This time it was Barnhart that doubled and VanKalker with the RBI single. The team could not muster up anything else in the rest of the game. St. Francis had a six-run 6th inning to go ahead at 14-2 and as a result the game ended after seven on the mercy rule.
Trinity had seven hits for the game with Lammers and Sroczynski each recording two. Tyler LaFlamme was on the mound for the first 3.1 innings for the loss.
The team is next in action on April 18 in a home double-header with Roosevelt University at 1 pm.
