Trolls Down Eagles
A conference double-header ended in two wins for the Trolls in a road double-header at Robert Morris University (Chicago, Illinois). The first seven inning game went to an extra inning before the Trolls posted a 12-10 win. Trinity took control of the second game from the beginning and rolled to a 16-2 win in seven innings. The team is now 18-18 overall and 6-8 in the CCAC.
Things looked promising for the Trolls with three runs in the 1st inning for the initial lead in game one. However the game changed in the bottom half as Robert Morris scored seven runs. Trinity came back with two in the 2nd inning to close the gap. With solo homers by Zack Jones and Alec Barnhart in 4th inning the Trolls were back in the game at a 7-7 tie. Robert Morris scored in the bottom half to gain the advantage again.
Each team scored in the 6th inning before the Trolls tied the game once again in the 7th when Kyle VanKalker walked and scored on an error. Trinity held Robert Morris in the bottom to push the game into extra innings.
With two outs in the 8th inning the Trolls rallied. Stefano Belmonte singled, advanced on a failed pick-off attempt, and scored on a single by Barnhart. Chris Riemersma followed with another single and when Blake Kerzich was hit by a pitch the bases were loaded. VanKalker got a hit to score one runner and Luke Weston walked to bring another across the plate before the inning was over. The three runs put the Trolls ahead a 12-9.
Tyler LaFlamme came to the mound in the bottom of the 8th and loaded the bases on three walks. He gave up one hit that scored a run, but caught the final batter looking to end the inning and the game.
For the game the Trolls had a total of 16 hits and Robert Morris had 10. Jones ended the game with a single, double, and home run and had two RBI. Belmonte and Barnhart each had two hits and two RBI. Richard Yelnick stepped into the game in relief for the win and LaFlamme records the save.
The Trolls started strong in the second game as well and this time did not allow Robert Morris to respond. Trinity started the game with three consecutive hits and kept the base path busy. They scored four runs in the 1st inning and two more in the 2nd for a 6-0 lead.
In the 4th inning the Trolls did not get a hit, but scored four runs to take complete control of the game. A lead-off double by Dan Budde in the 5th inning lead to another run for the team for an 11-0 lead. Trinity was not done and, with only one hit in the 7th inning, they added five more runs.
With Bryan Vanderlee on the mound the team allowed only five base runners through the first five innings. The Trolls continued to hold their shut-out until the bottom of the 7th inning when the Eagles got two runs.
Trinity had eight hits for the game as well as 11 walks. They took advantage of the Eagles’ six errors. Belmonte led the team with three hits and four RBI while Weston had two hits and two RBI. Vanderlee got the win.
The Trolls will play a three-game series with the University of St. Francis this weekend. They play at St. Francis on April 14 at 1 pm and host the Saints in a 1 pm double-header on April 15.
