Trolls Battle with Purdue-Northwest
A three-game series with Purdue University-Northwest (Hammond, Indiana) ended with one win and two losses for the Trolls. As has been the pattern in their conference outings, the Trolls’ losses were both one run games. In the single nine inning game Trinity took an early lead, but could not hold on to it. The game pushed into extra innings before the Trolls fell 7-6 in the 11th inning. Trinity shut-out the Pride in the first game of the Saturday’s double-header with a 5-0 final. In the second game they took a 6-3 lead, but gave up four runs in the late innings for another 7-6 loss. The team is now 16-18 overall and 4-8 in the CCAC.
The first part of Friday’s game belonged to the Trolls as they posted a 6-0 lead in the middle of the 7th inning. Chris Riemersma was a big part of the scoring with a two-run single in the 1st, a RBI double in the 5th, and lead-off double in the 7th that led to a run.
Purdue-Northwest first got on the board in the bottom of the 7th with four runs and then scored another two in the 8th inning to make it a 6-6 game. The Trolls had opportunities to score when they loaded the bases in the 8th and had runners in scoring position in the 9th and 10th innings.
The Trolls once again got on base in the 11th inning, but did not score. In the bottom of the 11th Purdue-Northwest opened with two singles and loaded the bases when a batter was hit by a pitch. The game ended when the next batter walked to bring in the winning run.
The Trolls had 10 hits for the game with Riemersma and Zack Jones each recording three. Tanner Reklaitis threw the first seven innings with nine strike-outs. Jones finished the game with 3.2 innings pitched for the loss.
In the first game of the double-header the Trolls grabbed a shut-out victory as Richard Yelnick held the Pride to four hits. Trinity took the lead in the bottom of the 1st inning when lead-off batter Tyler Sroczynski singled, stole second, and came home on a single by Jones. It was Jones in the 2nd inning that gave the Trolls two more runs on a double down the left line.
The Trolls rode their 3-0 lead to the 6th inning when they added two more to their total. With one runner on base, Sroczynski took advantage of errant throw to first base and motored to third while the runner went home. Belmonte singled to bring Sroczynski in to make it 5-0. The Trolls left the bases loaded as the inning ended.
In their last at bat in the top of the 7th, Purdue-Northwest was three up and three down and the Trolls took the win.
The Trolls had nine hits for the game with Belmonte leading the team with three. Jones recorded two hits and two RBIs and Sroczynski had two hits. Yelnick pitched the complete game for the shut-out win.
Trinity scored first in the second game of the double-header to take a 1-0 lead after the 3rd inning, but midway through the 6th they trailed at 3-1. The Trolls had a big bottom half of the 6th with six hits and five runs to regain the lead at 6-3.
Purdue-Northwest came right back in the top of the 7th and scored three runs to tie the game. The Pride went on to get three more hits and one run in the 8th to take over the top spot at 7-6. In their final two at bats the Trolls were three up and three down to suffer the loss.
The Trolls ended the game with 11 hits, but gave up 13. Alec Barnhart went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Riemersma and Belmonte also had two hits each. Tyler LaFlamme through the first 6.1 innings, but Doney stepped in and got the loss.
Trinity plans next on April 12 at Robert Morris University in a 5 pm double-header.
