Trinity Makes It a Sweep

The Trolls were not fooling around in a conference double-header with Calumet College of St. Joseph (Whiting, Indiana) and completed the sweep of the three-game series.  Playing as the visiting team on their own field, the Trolls shut-out the Crimson Wave in the first game with a 7-0 final score. The team ended the second game on the mercy rule after seven innings with a 16-6 final. Trinity improves to 15-13 overall and 3-0 in the CCAC.

The first game was a scoreless affair until the 4th inning when Trinity scored twice to take the lead. The Trolls added another two runs in the 6th inning for a 4-0 advantage. With RBI singles in the 7th inning Trinity added three more runs.  Defensively the team gave up six hits, but did not allow Calumet-St. Joseph to string anything together.

The Trolls ended the game with seven hits of which Blake Kerzich had two. Bryan Vanderlee was on the mound for the first six innings for the win and Sam Herzog pitched the final inning to share the shut-out.

Through three innings in the second game the Trolls had 4-3 lead, but they took over in the 4th inning when they scored seven runs. Three of those runs were scored on back-to-back doubles by Alec Barnhart and Kerzich.

Calumet-St. Joseph connected for four hits in the 5th inning to gain three runs to close the gap to 11-6. However the Trolls answered back in the top of the 6th with five runs to create a 10 run difference. Two of those runs scored on a homer by Barnhart.  The Crimson Wave loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but Zack Jones got out of it to retire the inning.  With the 10 run lead the game ended after the seventh.

The Trolls had a total of 16 hits and Calumet-. St. Joseph had nine. Barnhart went 4-for-4 with four RBI. Luke Weston ended with three hits. Ricky Rogers was credited with the win.

Trinity will continue conference action with a double-header with Trinity International at home on April 4 at 1 pm.
