Trolls Cruise by Crimson Wave

The Trolls opened their three game series with Calumet College of St. Joseph (Whiting, Indiana) with a lopsided win. In a single game Trinity took a 7-0 lead after the first two innings and continued to slug their way to an 18-4 victory in seven innings on the mercy rule. It was the first conference win for the Trolls who are 1-4 in the CCAC and 13-14 overall.

The Trolls took control of the game from the beginning as they scored two runs in the 1st inning. With two outs in the 2nd inning and bases loaded Stefano Belmonte blasted a grand slam to give the Trolls a 6-0 lead.  Alec Barnhart stepped to the plate next and sent another ball over the fence to create the 7-0 lead.

Trinity continued to bring runs across the plate as they tacked on five in the 4th inning. A solo homer by Kyle VanKalker and doubles by Tyler Scrozynski and Barnhart in the 5th inning brought helped bring in three more to make it a 15-1 game after five innings.

The Trolls were not finished yet and racked up home runs No. 4 and 5 of the game in the 6th inning as Belmonte and Barnhart struck again. With three runs in the inning the Trolls took an 18-1 lead. Calumet-St. Joseph had three hits for three runs in the top of the 7th, but it was not enough to keep the game going.

Overall Trinity had 14 hits for the game and Calumet-St. Joseph had eight. Barnhart was 5-for-5 with three doubles and two home runs. Belmonte set a school single game record with nine RBIs.  Richard Yelnick was on the mound for six innings and struck out nine batters.

The Trolls play a double-header with Calumet-St. Joseph on April 1 at 1 pm. Those games have been moved to Trinity and will be played at the Schaaf Athletics Complex.
